The Importance of Comprehensive Eye Exams

There are a variety of reasons why comprehensive eye exams should be made a priority for anyone who is concerned with maintaining their vision for as long as possible.

  • They are used to monitor the health of your eyes.

  • They are invaluable in the detection of serious eye diseases including cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration – each of which can lead to complete vision loss if not treated.

  • Comprehensive eye exams will enable our team to determine if you need glasses or contact lenses, or potentially, laser vision correction.

  • We will be able to diagnose the problem affecting you and prescribe treatment that will relieve your symptoms.

  • Regular eye exams will help to ensure that your child has healthy eyes and clear vision, enabling them to access their learning and unlock their full potential.

Elements of a Comprehensive Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam is very different from a regular vision screening appointment. Vision screening is what is used to simply assess the clarity of your vision at different distances to see if you are likely to need glasses, contact lenses or laser vision correction to help you to see more clearly. In contrast, a comprehensive eye exam takes the health of your eyes into account, as well as your eyesight.

Consultation

The consultation usually takes place at the start of any comprehensive eye exam. This is an opportunity for us to discuss your general and visual health with you and learn if you are likely to be particularly at risk of certain eye conditions. For example, some eye conditions are more likely if you work in specific environments or if you have blood relatives suffering from them. We will also ask you if you have any concerns about your eyesight.

Initial health tests

These are a series of different assessments that are conducted with the intention of comprehensively evaluating the health of your eyes. Our expert team will look at things such as your depth perception, color vision, the way that your eyes move and work with one another, your peripheral vision and your intraocular pressure. From this information and more, we can determine if you are likely to be suffering from eye diseases like glaucoma or cataracts.

Visual assessment

Our team will also want to look at the structures of your eye, both inside and out. We may use several pieces of equipment to do this, including a slit lamp. This enables us to look at elements including the retina and optic nerve so that we can check for any abnormalities that may necessitate further tests.

Visual acuity testing

This is the part of the eye test that most people are aware of, during which you will be asked to read letters off of a chart at a distance, and a sheet close by. This will enable our team to tell if you would need prescription lenses to see clearly. If this is the case, you may need other tests to determine which prescription you will need.

The results of your comprehensive eye exam will be shared with you, and unless any follow-up treatment is needed, you may not need to attend another appointment for up to two years.
