Eyelash Mites

Do you experience itchiness or irritation of the eyes, redness, swelling of the eyelids, eyelash loss, flaking of the skin around the eyes or crusting of the eyelashes? You may have Demodex folliculorum, the term for eyelash mites, which are invisible to the naked eye. This condition is commonly misdiagnosed as allergies or a bacterial infection of the eye. General eyelid cleansers provide minimal relief if one has an infestation of eyelash mites. Our optometrist is one of the few eye doctors in the Phoenix area to treat and diagnose Demodex folliculorum. With the use of an in-office microscope, Our doctors has the ability to diagnose and confirm the presence of eyelash mites. Once diagnosed, an exfoliation of the eyelids and lashes is performed to remove crusting and eyelash dandruff. At the end of the evaluation, she prescribes an effective treatment plan to get the eyelash mite population under control. Eradication of eyelash mites is not immediate due to their life cycle and must be closely monitored by an experienced eye doctor. View the video below to see a live eyelash mite.
